New $3.8 million PSE substation to improve customer reliability and increase system capacity in Lynden area

BELLEVUE, Wash. (Aug. 11, 2009) – Puget Sound Energy customers in Lynden and the surrounding area of Whatcom County will soon benefit from an upgraded electric system as the utility today begins constructing a new $3.8 million substation at 2052 Main Street. The new Berthusen substation will improve reliability, increase system capacity, and help reduce the likelihood of future power outages in the Lynden area.

“Constructing Berthusen substation is an important investment to improve reliability and help meet our customers’ future energy needs,” said Ray Trzynka, manager of local government and community relations for PSE.

Work on the new substation will include clearing and grading the site, installing the new substation and transmission line connection, and restoring the landscaping. When complete, the substation will have one 25 Megavolt Amperes transformer, with room to add a second transformer to later double the capacity of the substation within its current footprint. Existing transmission lines along West Main Street will bring power to the substation, where it will be stepped down to voltages to serve local customers.

Construction will take place during weekdays, with some select activities on the weekends. Crews will access the substation site via city streets, using signs and flaggers to direct traffic when needed. The substation project is scheduled to be complete by year end. With Berthusen, PSE will have two substations that serve the Lynden area.
