Puget Sound Energy substation and transmission line project

Carpenter substation and transmission line project

2017 project updates

  • Construction on the transmission line started in June 2010 and was completed in November 2010.
  • Substation planning is in progress.

Project overview

To increase electric reliability for Thurston County-area customers and meet increasing demand for power in northeastern Thurston County – including Lacey, Olympia and their urban growth areas – PSE plans to build a new substation in Lacey. When complete, the new substation will include one 25 mega volt ampere (MVA) transformer and have the space to add a second 25 MVA transformer, allowing PSE to double the capacity in the future without changing the substation footprint.

In 2010, we built two miles of new 115 kilovolt (kV) transmission line on Draham Rd NE and 15th Ave NE in Lacey. We replaceed the existing distribution poles along the route with taller poles to accommodate both the existing distribution line and new transmission line.
