PSE improves reliability in Jefferson County with $5 million substation
BELLEVUE, Wash. (May 7, 2008) - Puget Sound Energy today announced the new $5 million Chimacum substation is officially online and serving east Jefferson County businesses and residents. Built to increase capacity and further improve reliability to customers in Chimacum, Port Hadlock and the surrounding areas, the new substation is located approximately 1,000 feet north of the intersection of Chimacum Road and State Route 19.
“The addition of Chimacum substation gives the area long-term capacity and reliability, while helping to reduce power outages,” said Sue McLain, senior vice president of operations at PSE. “This investment in local infrastructure is critical to Jefferson County and its growing energy needs.”
The new substation is located between two other PSE substations about 20 miles apart that continue to serve the area: Port Ludlow substation on Beaver Valley Road near Larson Lake Road and Irondale substation on Four Corners Road. The new Chimacum substation will enable PSE to handle future load growth while adding vital backup to distribution systems in the area, resulting in fewer outages.
“The new substation is an important addition to the PSE infrastructure in the area because our two existing substations in the area were nearing capacity with the number of PSE customers in Jefferson County expected to double by the year 2030,” explained McLain.
Ongoing finishing details on the new substation include, new transmission lines serving the substation, undergrounding the existing overhead distribution lines on Chimacum Road between SR 19 and the substation, rebuilding the existing overhead distribution wire to increase capacity from the substation north along Chimacum Road to Ness’ Corner Road, and landscaping and restoration of the substation site.
Customers in Port Hadlock and Chimacum and on Beaver Valley Road, Rhody Dr., Anderson Lake Road, and those along the way to Marrowstone Island, will benefit the most from this upgrade.
