Puget Sound Energy natural gas pipeline project

Kent-Black Diamond natural gas line

Fall 2009 project completion
  • PSE completed construction of the new $46.4 million upgrade to our natural gas system in November 2009
Project overview

We have completed our natural gas system upgrade in south King County helping to meet our customers' current and future needs. In this multi-year project, we invested $46.4 million by installing 16.3 miles of new natural gas pipeline, two limit stations, and a new district regulator to the area. The new line increases our gas system's reliability and reinforces the current natural gas pipeline serving Kent, Auburn, Federal Way and Vashon Island.

In 2004, we installed 5.25 miles of 16-inch natural gas line between our Black Diamond gate station and our Sequoia district regulator in Kent. Two years later, in 2006, we installed 4.25 miles of 16-inch natural gas line between our Sequoia district regulator and Kent Limit Station. In 2008 we installed 16-inch pipe under Green River (1,800 feet), SR 167 at South 265th Street (1,100 feet) and the Union Pacific Railway (400 feet).

Gate and Limit Stations

Gate and limit stations are devices in our natural gas system that regulate the pressure of the natural gas. Specifically, they decrease the pressure of the natural gas for use in residences and businesses.

District Regulator

A district regulator is a device that is made up of piping, valves, control instruments and lines that automatically regulates pressure in the main pipeline to which it is connected.

How does natural gas get to my home or business?

Natural gas is a fossil fuel composed almost entirely of methane. Interstate pipelines transport natural gas to regional utility natural gas systems, where it is metered and delivered through a network of local mains, service lines and, ultimately, to customer homes and businesses. More than one-third of all Washington state households and businesses use natural gas.
