Puget Sound Energy distribution line project
Murden Cove underground distribution line project
Summer 2012 project complete
- Construction is being done in two phases. Phase one, which entailed undergrounding the existing distribution line along Sportsman Club Rd. NE, was completed in December 2011.
- Construction of phase two, which entails undergrounding the existing distribution line along NE New Brooklyn Rd. and Madison Ave. N, began in late June 2012 and was completed in August 2012.
Customers in the Winslow area of Bainbridge Island will see increased electric reliability with Puget Sound Energy’s new underground power line. PSE installed a one-mile underground distribution line between the Murden Cove substation, located at 9560 Sportsman Club Road, to a point on the existing underground distribution cable at the intersection of Northeast High School Road and Madison Avenue North (see project map).
Previously, the Murden Cove substation had three overhead distribution feeders providing power to residences and businesses in the area. A distribution feeder is the main source of power from a substation to distribute it to homes and businesses. Prior to this project, one of the feeders serving 1,600 residential and business customers in the downtown Winslow area was overloaded; it was one of the most heavily loaded feeders in PSE’s service territory.
The addition of a fourth underground distribution feeder out of Murden Cove substation will allow us to redistribute our customers between two feeders instead of one, relieving pressure on the heavily loaded feeder. This project will ensure that each feeder will serve fewer customers, provide more capacity for our customers on cold winter days, and add flexibility to switch customers between feeders in the event of scheduled or unscheduled outages.
What is a distribution line?
Distribution lines are critical links in the electrical system moving power from electrical substations through distribution transformers directly to homes or businesses. Unlike transmission lines, distribution lines typically carry less than 55 kV; PSE's distribution lines are typically 12.5 kV. Distribution lines can be installed both above and below ground.
What is a substation?
Substations are critical links in the electricity distribution system, containing utility circuit protection, voltage regulation, and equipment that steps down higher voltage to lower voltage. Before reaching homes and businesses, power is routed through our transmission system to a substation where it is changed to a lower voltage that can be utilized by customers.
Committed to keeping you informed
PSE will continue to provide updates to the community. We will notify residents and businesses near the project area when construction will occur. We aim to complete the work with as little disruption as possible.
