City of Bellevue public improvement project

PSE to relocate electric and gas utilities

Winter 2012 project completion
  • Relocation of gas service began in September 2012 and was completed on Oct. 5, 2012.
  • Relocation of electric services is near completion and was completed in December 2012.
Project overview

To accommodate the City of Bellevue’s public improvement project along West Lake Sammamish Parkway to North City Limits Project, Puget Sound Energy relocated our existing electric and natural gas utilities along the route. The relocation work, which occurred between 3413 West Lake Sammamish Parkway SE and 4341 West Lake Sammamish Parkway SE, provides continued electric and natural gas reliability for our customers.

The City of Bellevue’s West Lake Sammamish Parkway Project was designed to improve the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers by constructing a path along the west side of the parkway. PSE and the other utilities that serve the area’s residents moved their equipment before the City began its work.

The work entailed:

Electric distribution line relocation: Relocated approximately 3000 feet of overhead electric distribution line and 21 wood poles between two and 10 feet back from their previous location. Replaced the existing wood poles with new wood poles.

Natural gas pipline relocation: Relocated approximately 250 feet of 8-inch underground natural gas pipeline approximately 15 feet west of its previous location.

Vegetation management: Trimmed and removed trees to make room for the relocated distribution poles.

What is a transmission line?

Transmission lines are key elements in the electrical distribution system. The lines safely transport high voltage electricity from power sources like dams and wind generating facilities to substations in local communities. Transmission normally takes place at voltages of 55 kV and higher.

What is a distribution line?

Distribution lines are critical links in the electrical system moving power from electrical substations through distribution transformers directly to homes or businesses. Unlike transmission lines, distribution lines typically carry less than 55 kV; PSE's distribution lines are typically 12.5 kV. Distribution lines can be installed both above and below ground.
