PSE Supports Capitol Hill Push for Full Funding of Low Income Energy Assistance
National Drive Seeks Strong Program as Energy Bill-Payment Assistance Need Grows
BELLEVUE, Wash., July 28, 2010 - Puget Sound Energy today supported other utilities and representatives of social service agencies from across the country on Capitol Hill to urge Congress to sustain funding to help low-income households pay their heating bills through the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
As part of the July 28 National Fuel Funds Network’s Washington Action Day for LIHEAP, PSE representatives supported the efforts of the American Gas Association, the Edison Electric Institute and other utility industry organizations requesting Congress to support full LIHEAP funding for the fiscal year that begins October 2010.
“Full funding of LIHEAP for next winter would help provide continued relief to customers facing economic uncertainty and high winter heating bills,” said Suzanne Hanson, PSE supervisor of energy assistance programs.
PSE and the utility industry are urging Congress to fund LIHEAP at $5.1 billion—consistent with last year’s funding level.
The share of LIHEAP funding for the community service agencies serving residents in PSE’s 11-county Washington state service area was $14 million in 2009-2010.
In addition to LIHEAP aid, qualified low-income customers may receive bill-payment assistance from PSE’s Home Energy Lifeline Program, or HELP. Depending on income and household size, a qualified low-income recipient can receive up to $1,000 from PSE’s HELP, and up to $1,000 in LIHEAP funds.
