PSE Hosting Public Ribbon-Cutting for New Mount Vernon Substation

New Facility Designed to Enhance Customers’ Electric Service, Accommodate Future Growth

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (April 17, 2013) – Puget Sound Energy is inviting Mount Vernon residents to join Mayor Jill Boudreau, local business leaders and PSE representatives next week to celebrate the completion of a new electrical substation in south Mount Vernon. A ribbon-cutting is planned for 3 p.m. Thursday (April 25) at the substation, 1218 E. Blackburn Road, followed by refreshments in nearby Hillcrest Park.

The new substation should improve the reliability of electric service for homes and businesses in the growing neighborhoods of east and south Mount Vernon, said Brian Gentry, PSE manager of community engagement in Skagit County. The energy facility, he explained, gives PSE more options for re-routing the flow of power and restoring service faster when damaging storms or unforeseen equipment problems cause a power outage.

The new substation, with capacity to serve about 4,000 homes and businesses, also was built to accommodate future growth in Mount Vernon and outlying areas. The substation’s footprint will allow for a doubling of the facility’s power-delivery capacity in the future, if needed, to meet increased power demand in the community.

PSE crews began construction of the $8.8 million substation last July.  The facility is scheduled to be operational by mid-May.

Between 2007 and 2016, upgrades to PSE’s electric system in Skagit County are expected to total an estimated $200 million.  More information on the Blackburn Road substation is available on PSE.com.
