PSE Grant Helps Build Solar Project

Library in Olympia Lands new Renewable Energy System

BELLEVUE, Wash. (Nov. 18, 2013) – Puget Sound Energy’s Green Power Program and the City of Olympia will unveil a new solar project that’s been built on top a library in the heart of the state’s capital.

The system, which is mounted to the Timberland Regional Library’s rooftop, is constructed of 33 solar panels and will produce 8,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The electricity generated will help power the library facility and result in a cost savings of approximately $4,000 per year.

In 2011, PSE challenged residents in Olympia to ‘Flip the Switch’ to clean, renewable power. The response was tremendous. More than 4,000 customers in Olympia participate in the program.

PSE awarded a $20,000 grant to the City of Olympia to build the solar project. The city provided an additional $40,000 in project funds. Through its Green Power program challenges, PSE has granted over $150,000 to cities to build solar demonstration projects. This investment highlights PSE’s commitment to renewable energy in the communities it serves.

PSE’s voluntary Green Power Program gives PSE electric customers a way to guarantee that some or all of the energy they use is matched in the electric grid with clean electricity from wind, solar, biogas and other renewable energy sources. None of the renewable energy in PSE’s Green Power Program is generated by PSE; it all comes from other independent producers of renewable power.

The city partnered with Ameresco and South Sound Solar to design and construct the new system, which uses Washington-made solar panels and inverters.  The system is designed to allow for future expansion.  The library will display project information for its patrons, including real-time energy production statistics accessed through the library’s web page.
