Bainbridge Lands Big Green

Bainbridge Island Passes First Milestone in PSE Competition to Earn $40,000 For New Solar Project in Their Community

BELLEVUE, Wash. (Oct. 7, 2013) – The competition is heating up in Puget Sound Energy's "Take Charge Green Power Challenge." Bainbridge Island has hit its first goal and secured a $20,000 grant. The funds will help pay for a solar array on the roof of the island’s Waterfront Park Community Center.

Residents and businesses in Bainbridge Island, Anacortes, Kirkland, Snoqualmie and Tumwater are part of a competition to encourage residents to join PSE's Green Power Program. As of September 30, all five cities have reached their initial goals and are now solely focused on winning a $20,000 bonus. That means the winning city will get $40,000, which will be used to install a solar project in their town.

To earn the bonus, a city needs to have the highest percentage increase in new program participants from available accounts compared to the other cities. PSE's voluntary Green Power Program gives PSE electric customers a way to guarantee that some or all of the energy they use is matched with clean, renewable energy sources from the region.

So far, Bainbridge’s Green Power campaign, which is being championed by the City of Bainbridge Island and non-profit group Sustainable Bainbridge, has helped increase local participation in the program to over 1,250 residents and businesses. There are now less than three months left to win the bonus. The challenge ends on December 31st. The city has chosen the community center as the site of its solar project. The project would help offset power use at the center and help keep the total number of solar energy projects on the island above average for other cities in PSE’s service territory.

  • All of the renewable energy in PSE's Green Power Program is generated by independent producers of renewable power; it’s separate from wind resources owned and operated by PSE.
  • With two participation options, the average PSE residential customers can purchase 100 percent green power for approximately $10 to $12 a month based on their actual usage, or buy a specific amount, with a minimum purchase of $4 per month for 320 kilowatt hours (kWh).
  • Additional green power can be bought in increments of $2 for 160 kWh.
  • Business customers can also participate and receive recognition benefits. Every level of participation counts toward the "Take Charge" participation goal.
